Inspiration I: Glass Beads
Inspiration comes from a variety of sources. I’m going to explore some of what inspires me in the weeks to come. Here’s a post I wrote a few years back for another blog group with some updates and new thoughts. When I first started making jewelry, it was at a local bead shop that closed in the evening. Small groups of friends could come in after hours, string beads, drink wine and share chitchat. It was just for fun then, but I knew that I enjoyed the activity and I was drawn to the different materials: the intricacies of Bali silver beads; the shapes, colors and textures of freshwater pearls; and, at that time, natural stones and semiprecious stones. I didn’t really think about inspiration though. It was a form of relaxing for me…to clear my mind of rigid computer-related stuff. The inspiration came later. Over 7 years ago I discovered lampwork beads.

SOME of my business cards have spacer beads attached to them, and I bought this cool ribbon punch to make the work easier. Cut the ribbon, string on the beads, tie a knot, pretty pretty. I’m not totally insane -.

Last night, I was too tired to do bead embroidery, but still felt the need to be creative. So, I used some new Bali Beads to make a fun, dangly Bali Silver Man ! I used a 12mm Lantern Bead , a 12mm Circle Rows Bead , two large fan beads , small wheels with balls , and small beads with a dotted center/fluted ends Maybe I was also inspired by my journey through the desert, because I felt the need to add some cowboy boots & hands from my bead stash. More Bead Ornaments
I just couldn’t stop at two! I have two more ornaments to share with you today. First I created a pair of filigree ornaments with brass pieces from Paloma Antigua. There are all sorts of great painted filigree pieces in this shop! I added a glass bead, rhinestone rondelle, one of my disk beads, a bead cap and a fire polished glass bead to an eye pin. I attached the hanger and filigree with 13mm jump rings. The filigree is super lightweight so it won’t weigh down your branches. The filigree comes in sets of 2 so you can make for your tree and one for a friend or give them as a set. I could see them done in several different colors and given as a special gift. The second, is missing any art beads, but I have these round beads I need to use up. The ceramic rounds were on a bargain table at a local bead show and I ended up getting two strands of these huge beads that I will never use for jewelry. Sometimes that the danger of shopping at a show!

by John Michael Greer When I proposed in last week’s Archdruid Report post that readers write science fiction stories about the crisis of industrial society, I wasn’t thinking of Fed chairman Ben Bernanke as a potential author. Still, a speech of his that made the New York Times a few days back suggests that he’s got a sufficiently wild imagination for the job. In that speech, while trying to explain why shoveling trillions of dollars of money into the coffers of the banks that caused the Great Recession hasn’t done anything besides enriching bankers, Bernanke insisted that what’s wrong with the economy is that Americans are irrationally depressed about it. That, he claimed, is what’s keeping consumers from engaging in the binge spending that will get the economy moving again. You have to hand it to the man; it’s an extraordinary leap of fantasy. Out there in the real world, after all, a sixth of the US population is living below the poverty line.

My little girl sat on the bench beside me. It was summertime; we were on vacation near the sea while waiting for the clock to chime our dinner reservation table. This would be one of her first grown-up restaurant meals and we were excited at the prospect. We were people-watching and the newly-popular belly-button ring was on display. My daughter looked up at me and said, “You won’t have to worry about that.” She was only 8 years old if that, but there was clearly a conspiratorial edge to her comment. No belly button piercing? I asked. “Silly Mommy.” “No tattoos?” “No,” she said and rolled her blue eyes. You know where this is going. My daughter is now 24 years old, and while she has no ring in her navel, her ears are severally pierced. On the left, there is what is called (appropriately, unfortunately) an “industrial” post, which is threaded through cartilage. Every time I see it, I want to wail, “Ow-ow-ow.” When she called a few weeks ago and said, “I have something to tell you,” I guessed right away.

THE } We all know how much gypsy artists Kerry Lynn adores texture. All of her fabulously vintage projects are adorned with lots of it. So to create a piece of wearable art she used a gorgeous combination of french linen from her stash and our favorite seam binding ribbon to create this stunning necklace. And it’s a lot simpler than you’d think! Read on for simple instructions and in no time you’ll have one of your own. Supplies needed: 7gypsies seam binding ribbon 7gypsies travel binding ring dangle charms 7gypsies crystal binding ring dangles jump rings vintage linen or other loose weave fabric sewing machine or needle and thread Stacked Linen Flower Cut three varying sized circles of linen from your fabric. Stitch together in center and then rough up the edges so they are frayed by simply running them against your palm a few times. Stitch along one edge of a 6”-8” piece of seam binding. I used a basting stitch } on my sewing machine but you could also simply do the same with a running stitch by hand.

YOU can so do this…
Once the stitch is in place pull one thread } or the single thread if you hand stitched, and gather your ribbon together. Once gathered knot the ends together, then stitch to the top of your linen flower and stitch on a single crystal bead from the binding ring dangles. Set aside. The Necklace Cut two 24” pieces of seam binding and double them and loop around a jump ring . Then stitch the other ends about 5” from the end so they would always stay together then tie that end around a jump ring. Attach two crystal dangles together at the bottom of each Use the dangle clasp on each end of the dangle to clip to the jump ring at both ends of ribbon. Clip the travel dangle charm to crystal near the bow. Attach linen flower to crystal near the jump ring end.
