How to be a stingy santa | Ariane Sherine
Time went by, and soon it was spring. On a visit to my grandmother’s, I showed her a picture the girl had drawn. “Bring her round!” she suggested, before starting to plan what she could feed us. And so, a few months later, I arrived at the nine-year-old’s house, ready to take her to meet my grandmother. She came bounding down the stairs, wearing her best dress, patent leather shoes – and, for the first time in months, the jewellery I had given her at Christmas.

Question time: Do you DIY?
At the Fashion For Lunch offices this week we have been discussing Doing It Yourself. Not actually fixing things that are broken (I wouldn’t know what to do with a tool kit), but the friendlier face of make-do and mend: trying to make your own clothes and accessories. I say trying because for me, this has never been a success. When I wander round vintage fairs and see homemade accessories, I always get conned into thinking it looks so easy.

Surprise: Pakistani generals helped sell nuclear secrets
One of the documents published on Thursday was allegedly a copy of a 1998 letter in English to him from Jon Byong Ho, then the secretary of the North Korean Workers’ party, who is believed to have masterminded the state’s covert trade in nuclear and missile technology. The document states that “the $3m have already been paid” to Karamat, and “half a million dollars” and some jewellery had been given to Lt Gen Khan, who went on to run the national water and power company. The Washington Post interviewed senior US officials who said that the document contained “accurate details of sensitive matters known only to a handful of people in Pakistan, North Korea and the United States”, and that the substance was “consistent with our knowledge” of the same events…

Nov. 1, 2010 at 7:16 p.m. OriginalsByLynnette Often I have daydreamed about removing everything from the house and only putting back what I really need or love. After a recent cross-country move, this became a reality. We only took our most basic possessions. At first, it was absolute torture being “without” because there is a void. But now, I’m on my way back to pack up the rest, and the three-month letting go process has shaped my perspective. The “need” pile has dwindled, and the “want” pile has become a little obsolete.

There’s No Place Like Home
>> I’m not sure where home exactly is for Jordan Askill , the incredible jeweller, sculptor and all round visionary but it’s somewhere where horses run wild, petals fly into beautiful formations and tigers arch into impossible structures. This collection intriguingly entitled “There’s No Place Like Home” marks a proper circle-complete collection where Askill’s sculptural work ties into his wearable jewellery as well as providing an actual storage unit for the jewellery. Though let’s ask ourselves, really, who IS this magical person that can afford a hollowed out horse-wave resin sculpture that can also store her rings and necklaces inside it on the purpose built shelves. I’d like to imagine that one day I’ll be touring some stately home (that’s clearly ALL I’ll be doing in old age…) and a guide will point out “And this is a Jordan Askill sculpture that also acts as a jewellery showcase object…
